Workshop Alternative Learning

YMCA Reading provide practical skills classes in a professional workshop setting, offering an alternative to formal education for young people who are in danger of exclusion from school.

All workshop students are fully funded referrals from either Cranbury College for three sessions per week, or Phoenix College for one session per week. The project has resulted in a number of young people gaining apprenticeships and moving into successful, sustained employment.

Case Study

Bradley is currently working as an apprentice at the YMCA, working directly with our Maintenance Team and Workshop Training Team. Bradley was originally referred to the workshop by Cranbury College when he was having difficulties at school. Bradley is involved in all aspects of maintenance and woodwork and the Workshop Team recognised real potential in Bradley. Less than a year into his apprenticeship he has become a respected and valued member of our team. Bradley is aiming for a qualification in Carpentry.
