YMCA Reading receive cheque from Mayor of Reading Charity Fund
11th Sep 2019

Yesterday marked the finale of a year of fundraising for the Mayor of Reading Charity Fund.  Our thanks go to (now ex) Mayor Debs Edwards who chose YMCA Reading as one of the four charities she wanted to support throughout the year.  The four charities were:

YMCA Reading
Launchpad
BWA (Berkshire Women’s Aid)
Berkshire West Your Way
Each of the charities shared an equal portion of the £9,861.82 raised during the year.  You can read more about each of the charities here.

We all took part in a variety of fundraising activities, from the Human Fruit machine at the 2018 Reading Town Meal and culminating in the Mayor's Quiz Night, with many other activities and events in between, including teams running in the Sage Reading Half Marathon back in March.

Arlene Kersley, Chief Executive of YMCA Reading said:

'Being part of the Mayors Charity Fund this year has not just been about the amount paid out today.  Mayor Debs Edwards has worked really hard to raise the profile of all of the charities and that has meant that we have all been able to raise more funds beyond what we are receiving today.  We are forever grateful to Cllr. Edwards for her longstanding support and friendship to YMCA Reading.'

The £2,465. that YMCA Reading have received will go towards two key projects.  £2,000 will top-up our fundraising to refurbish the YMCA Reading Milward Sports Centre, and £500. will go towards making improvements to the facilities at the Padworth Outdoor Activity Centre.

The YMCA Sports Centre refurbishment is expected to get underway early in 2020.  The project will result in fully modernised, accessible and welcoming sport facilities.  These will include new heating, lighting, toilets, showers and changing rooms, redecorated and modernised Multi-use Gym and Sports Studio.

The facilities will be much more inviting for the health and well-being programme we are rolling out for our residents and will also be available for public use.

The Padworth Activity is available for use by any youth groups, and is used by Scout groups, schools, YMCA residents and the Parkside Pre-School.  We are currently fundraising to build an outdoor classroom and to improve the overnight dormitories as well as add an outdoor pizza oven.
