It certainly has been a busy time here at YMCA Reading and we're really sorry we haven't kept our blog as up to date as would like. Funny enough we have had our hands full with a little something called Covid-19. Or just full of all that hand washing we have been doing.
We have been here through-out lock-down. So while some people have been enjoying the sunshine YMCA Reading Support and Housing Staff along with the Management Team and a skeleton Cafe crew have carried on serving our residents. Providing support when you cannot meet face-to-face has proven challenging for our team and our residents. The team have made every effort to keep in regular phone and video contact and to make sure all residents have the support they need.
We have added additional hours of mental health support thanks, once again to Berkshire Community Foundation who generously gave to us from the start of the lock-down to help us pay for those extra hours. We know that residents are experiencing raised anxiety levels and mental health issues are also on the rise. On the positive side a number of young people have improved their family relationships during this time and some have even been able to repair broken relationships and return home.
Many of you will know, I love my silver linings stories, from bad circumstances we often find some positive outcomes.
We have genuinely missed the Parkside Pre-School staff and children, who always brighten our days here. We are so happy that they are coming back on Monday the 8th of June, albeit in a much reduced and carefully planned way to ensure the safety of Pre-school families, staff and YMCA residents.
Park-side Cafe has been closed to the public since lock-down, but had remained open to provide breakfast and lunch to residents, and meals to residnets that are shielding or self-isolating. They have also done their bit to keep staff plied with coffee, which is very important!
Good News - the Cafe is aiming to re-open its doors from Monday 15th June for take-away service only from 9am to 2pm. Lines have been put-down for social distancing and hand sanitisers abound. Please use card where possible to avoid cross-contamination with cash.
We look forward to having you back, but are sorry that it will be sometime yet before we can welcome back toddlers to our soft play area.
Like wise we remain closed to visitors and our public areas are not available to let, yet.
The YMCA Sport Centre refurbishment is back on at pace and while it won't be open for awhile yet the progress is amazing. Once complete we look forward to welcoming our local community back to a building we know will be a positive asset for all. We are so very grateful to the many donors that have made it possible, but that is separate article to follow.
We hope that guidelines might permit limited opening of the Padworth Activity Centre in August for camping, keep an eye out for updates.
I would like to close for now by saying a very big thank you to all of the YMCA Reading Team: Staff, Board, Volunteers and Residents who have all done their bit, during very difficult times to keep us all safe and well.
