First Reading YMCA Sea Scouts
The 1st Reading (YMCA) Scout Group offers a range of activities for boys & girls with our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Explorers.
The 1st Reading (YMCA) Scout Group was founded by Reading YMCA in 1908 and is now recognised as the third oldest Scout Group in the world. The Group became Sea Scouts in 1942 and is proudly number 83 of only 101 Royal Navy Recognised Sea Scouts Groups in the UK.
The Sea Scouts have been a prominent feature on the riverside at Caversham for the last 80 years and now have a state of the art Waterside Activity Centre which was built in partnership with the YMCA and opened in June 2012. Their winter meetings are held at the YMCA Milward Sport Centre.
The group’s regular activities include kayaking, open canoeing, rowing, bell boating, hiking, summer and winter camps, and of course the many badge-work courses open to all Scouts. The group has also taken part in Climbing and Caving.
Perhaps best of all, as one of the few Royal Navy recognised groups, they often have the opportunity to stay onboard Royal Navy ships and Royal Navy submarines – Wow!
Another highlight of the year is the ‘Family Fun Day’ held in June where all family members and friends join together for a fantastic time on the riverside.
